Winter Maintenance Guide
What you need to know to be prepared

Winter Maintenance
It's time to tackle the do-it-yourself home maintenance that will keep your family warm and cozy...and save you money and fuel too!

Close your kitchen vent, fireplace damper and closet doors when not in use
Fix air leaks around windows, doors and electrical outlets. Repair weather stripping/caulking.
Turn back your thermostat when not at home.  Adjusting your thermostat back no more than 8 degrees can save about 8% on your annual heating bill.
Remove leaves and debris from gutters and leaders.  This prevents spill-over which can cause basement flooding and paint damage.

FREEZE OUT FROZEN PIPES!
Ice cream...ice skating....those are the kinds of frozen treats everyone enjoys.  But it there's one thing you don't want to put the freeze on this winter it's your pipes!  Protecting against frozen pipes is a must for all homeowners, as the damage caused by burst pipes could leave you with headaches, property damage and an empty wallet.  Here are some precautions you can take to avoid this costly winter mishap.

• Seal and leaks that would allow cold air inside where pipes are located.
• Wrap pipes with insulating material or with heating cable.
• Disconnect garden hoses and bring them indoors.
• Shut off and drain water from all outside faucets.
• In bitterly cold weather, let water trickle from your spigots and flush all toilets once a day.
• Leave the heat on at all times, and set your thermostat no lower than 13 degrees.

Don't Forget to Clear your Fill...
When the snow piles up, it's only a matter of time before you're digging out your car and shoveling your driveway.  But, it's just as important to keep your oil pipe clear.  Should snow or debris cover your fill, our deliverymen may have trouble locating it.  Make sure you keep it visible-you may even want to mark it with a flag.  Remember, a clear fill makes for a smooth delivery!

Thinking about switching to gas?
Be prepared to pay for more than you think.

The true dollars and cents are that a gas customer will pay a flat monthly fee of between $11.25 and $14.00 per month; which is $135.00-$168.00 per year just to be a gas customer.  At Chalmers Fuels you only pay for the product we deliver.
Over 20 years (which is the manufacturers' recommended life of an oil tank) the customer charges a gas customer pays are $3240.00-$3360.00; that is at least $2000.00 more than the cost to replace an oil tank.
So, rather than change your energy, change your equipment to improve efficiency and produce immediate savings!
